HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Sophomore Joe Emerich led the Illinois State men's golf team on day one of the Sam H. Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Mississippi at Canebrake Country Club. Emerich fired a two-round-total 144 (73, 71) and is currently tied for 23rd.
Alongside Emerich, two other Redbirds finished day one in the top-50 individually as freshman Will Cullen is tied for 30th after a two-round-total of 145 (68, 77), and sophomore Drew Miller is tied for 42nd after a two-round-total of 147 (72, 75).
"We had a very solid first round today, we were just not able to maintain our consistency, said head coach Ray Kralis. "Our guys put themselves in a position to make a move in the second round but our consistency is something we have struggled with through our entire fall season."
Illinois State is in 11th place after a day-one total of 586 (286, 300). Tournament host Southern Mississippi leads the 11-team event with a two-round-team-total of 563 (277, 286). The individual event is led by Gonzalo Berlin of Jacksonville State, who fired a two-round-total of 132 (67, 65).
"We have an opportunity to do some good things tomorrow," said Kralis. "This is a pride check for our guys and hopefully we can finish our fall season on a positive note."
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday beginning with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
