Bowling Green, Ohio. - Senior guard Dom Johnson had 16 points to lead a foursome in double figures, as Illinois State's men's basketball team recorded a 69-58 win over host Bowling Green at Anderson Arena Sunday afternoon. The win marked ISU's first road victory this season.
Johnson was joined in double figures by Osiris Eldridge (11 points), Levi Dyer (11) and Brandon Sampay (10), who was seeing his first substantial action since Nov. 27. BGSU was led by Darryl Clements' 18 points; Chris Knight also chipped in 14 points for the Falcons.
With the win, ISU improves to 7-3 on the season. Bowling Green drops to 4-5.
ISU used a quick start to claim a double-digit advantage mid-way through the first half, and took a 32-19 lead into the locker room at halftime. Very similar to ISU's last road game at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 4), the Redbirds came out firing, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. Slack had eight points in the stretch, including ISU's first six tallies. Johnson added his first of three treys heading into the first media timeout (16:25). Eldridge followed with eight straight points to propel the Redbirds' lead to 19-8 just four minutes later.
ISU held a double-digit advantage for the remainder of the half, holding the Falcons to just five points over the final 6:25 of the stanza. ISU received a lift from Sampay. He scored six-straight points after Slack picked up his second foul (5:00). Johnson's nine points led a balanced offensive attack for the Redbirds, while Knight chipped in six points to lead BGSU.
Illinois State shot 42.3 percent in the frame, and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The Falcons countered with just a 30.8 mark from the field, and committed nine turnovers.
Bowling Green opened the second half on a 17-7 run, and forced ISU into two timeouts in the first 6:34 of the frame trailing just 39-36. The Falcons eventually tied the game at 39-39 after a three-pointer by Brian Moten, but ISU never gave up the lead. With 6:33 remaining, the Redbirds pushed their lead back to eight, 52-44.
Clements' three-pointer with 5:50 remaining pulled BGSU within 52-50, but Holloway and Dyer answered with consecutive treys to push the advantage to 58-50 with 4:53 left. The Redbirds hit six free throws in the final 49 seconds to secure the 69-58 victory.
Illinois State will have the next five days off before visiting Mid-American Conference foe Ball State Saturday (Dec. 22) beginning at 1 p.m.
