NORMAL, Ill. - - The Illinois State men's tennis team continued their weekend home winning streak by defeating Wright State 7-0, Sunday at the Evergreen Racquet Club. Alfredo Lagarda and Oscar Beich had a stand out weekend, Lagarda won five of his six matches and Beich went 5-0.

This weekends wins over Butler, Western Illinois and Wright State give the `Birds a 4-2 mark in spring action.

Head coach Greg Kennett knows that the `Birds will continue to improve with each match.

"The more matches we can get the better," said Kennett. "Playing good teams is the best way to improve and we accomplished that this weekend."

The `Birds got off on the right foot as they captured the first point in doubles action. Beich and Luka Marinkovic took down Dan Sundersingh and Ted Dahmus (8-1) at Flight 3. The `Birds secured the doubles point at No. 2 as Nuno Jacinto and Daniel Tobar posted a 8-2 win over Brian Butt and Lance Koetter.

Kennet felt that doubles started off slow at one but, No. 2 and 3 doubles were able to make up for the loss.

"We started off slow at one and we are always trying to avoid things like that but, two and three double were really good," said Kennett. "It is good that one part of our team can pick the other guys up. We need to work on keeping up a certain level of intensity in our play."

In singles action, Xavier Riart-Ferrer took the first singles point at No. 5 from the Raider's Sundersingh (6-2, 6-2). Marinkovic claimed the point from Brian Butt at No. 4, posting a 6-2, 6-0 win. With four singles points at stake, Tobar secured the lead downing Dahmus in the No. 6 division. Rounding out the weekend, Lagarda captured his third singles win against Teufel in Flight 2. Yohann Nograbat bested WSU's Koetter 7-5, 6-4 at No. 1 and in the final match of the day Jacinto took down Camilleri (6-3, 7-5).

Kennett felt his `Birds showed a strong performance today.

"Yohann played the best singles I have seen him play this spring," said Kennett. "He has played some close matches but, he hasn't pulled through in the end like he did it today.

"Oscar was tough this weekend, he was 5-0 winning three doubles matches and two singles matches. Alfredo has been consistently strong. He knows that once you have been winning it is very hard to be taken out and has been taking advantage of that. He doesn't want to be out of the line up and he has done a great job for us."

The Redbirds will continue their homestand stint next weekend at the Evergreen Racquet Club, taking on DePaul Saturday, February 17 at 2 p.m. They will then face Northern Illinois Sunday, February 18 at 1 p.m.
