Redbird Golf Teams Help Out Local Community

March 1, 2007

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's and men's golf teams see the importance of being involved in the local community and were proud to be the repeat recipient of the second-annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing Trophy, Wednesday at Redbird Arena. Over the past holiday season, the teams' bell ringing efforts raised $512.12 for the Salvation Army.

"The money goes towards helping Salvation Army operations throughout the year," said Salvation Army Corps Officer Captain Scott A. Shelbourn. "The primary focus is our shelter program. The shelter also runs a soup kitchen; last year alone we served over 22,000 evening meals at the kitchen."

Illinois State head coach Ray Kralis recognizes the importance of community service.

"To be able to provide food for someone who is hungry or provide shelter to someone really touches your heart," said Kralis. "It certainly puts things into perspective when you hear from Captain Shelbourn how much of an impact the money has made."

In addition to the Salvation Army's shelter program and soup kitchen, they are also able to provide other forms of assistance. A social service program is offered that provides assistance with heating and electric bills. The Salvation Army also owns a camp near Washburn, Ill., where children and adults enjoy programs during the summer.

"It was neat that we were able to hang on to the trophy for two years in a row and I certainly hope our teams continue to take pride in that," said Kralis. "The needs are still great and hopefully that will inspire us to do even more next year."
