Junior Carolyne Parent won her team-leading 14th match of the season, but Marquette defeated the Illinois State women's tennis team, 6-1, on Saturday in Milwaukee at the Golden Eagles' Helfaer Tennis Stadium. Marquette overpowered the Redbirds capturing wins at eight of nine positions.
The loss was the fourth consecutive for the `Birds and sixth in their last seven matches. The Redbirds' record now stands at 4-6, while the Golden Eagles improve their record to 8-10.
"Marquette is a much improved team this year and really did a good job of taking us out of the match early," head coach Chris Hoover said. "We had our moments in singles where we could have gotten a couple more victories, but we couldn't get over the hump.
"We need to keep fighting for every point and concentrate on getting back in the win column tomorrow against UW-Milwaukee."
The match began with the Redbirds falling behind 1-0 after Marquette swept all three doubles matches to claim the point. The Redbirds' No. 1 team of senior Katri Miller and junior Véronique Parke-Bédard fell 8-2 to Marquette's team of Shannon Brown and Robin Metzler, while MU's team of Maria Calbeto and Kylie Moore outlasted ISU's duo of sophomore Tanja Hrovatic and freshman Julia Zubkova, 8-7 (10-5 in the tiebreaker), at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 position, Erin Watkins and Francina Bonnelly dispatched ISU's Parent and senior Matea Simovic, 8-3.
In singles action, Parent recorded the lone Redbird victory at the No. 4 position. The native of St.-Jean Sur Richelieu, Québec, recorded her 14th victory of the season by sweeping Metzler in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Parent is now 4-0 when playing at the No. 4 spot and has won seven of her last ten matches.
Marquette was dominate winning five of six single matches, with Brown's 6-2, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 spot over Hrovatic clinching the win for the Golden Eagles.
In the final match of the day at the No. 1 spot, Miller fought hard claiming the first set 6-2 over Moore, before Moore rallied to win the next two, 7-5, 6-3.
The Redbirds conclude their weekend in Milwaukee on Sunday when they return to the Helfaer Tennis Stadium to take on UW-Milwaukee. First serve between the `Birds and Panthers is set for 10 a.m.
