ST. LOUIS -
Freshman Stacey Miller earned Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honors for the first time in her career after tying for 34th at the Indiana University Invitational, April 9-10, in Carmel, Ind., at the Crooked Stick Golf Club.
Miller, a Bloomington, Ill., native has competed in the Redbird lineup at every tournament this year.
"Stacey has done an amazing job," said assistant coach Pina Gentile. "She has competed in every tournament for us in both the fall and the spring. As a freshman, she has played great golf for us and I think we will continue to see her put up low numbers."
Miller fired a 156 (74, 82) at the tournament and led the team during the first round. After the first day of competition, Miller finished in a tie for second as the `Birds sat in 15th. During the final day of play the team moved into 17th as Miller tied for 34th.
Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with her performance and looks forward to watching her play throughout the rest of her career.
"Stacey is learning how competitive she can be on this level," said Kralis. "She was a three sport athlete in high school, and her demands with the other sports took away from some of her competitive opportunities in golf.
"It is exciting to see her continue to succeed in new situations and prove to herself that not only does she belong here, but she can be dominate here. This is probably the most competitive field we have been in all year."
Miller and the Redbirds will return to action at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, April 15-17, in Peoria, Ill. at WeaverRidge Golf Course.
