For their hard work on the field and in the classroom, Illinois State baseball players Luke Baughman and Collin Salzenstein were tabbed honorable mention selections to the 2007 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete Team, as announced by the league office Monday. Baughman earned his second consecutive honorable mention honor, while Salzenstein garnered his first accolade.
Nominees for the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team must be starters or important reserves, with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. The student-athletes must have also reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their school and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
Baughman, an elementary education major, carries a 3.54 cumulative GPA. The Normal, Ill., native appeared in 12 games with 10 starts in 2007, posting an 8.39 ERA in 44.0 innings pitched.
Salzenstein started 47 of the 48 games he played at shortstop in 2007, batting .250 with 46 hits and 11 RBI. Salzenstein, who holds a 3.11 GPA in communication studies, led the team in stolen bases with 18 as well as sacrifice hits (10) after transferring from Xavier.
