NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State Director of Athletics Dr. Sheahon Zenger announced the hiring of Peyton Deterding on Monday, as the assistant athletics director of facilities and operations.
"We are excited about Peyton joining the Illinois State family," Zenger said. "He's an individual that we feel can build upon the success we have had in the facilities management area. Peyton is somebody who we think will be a very good fit for our leadership team."
Deterding joins the ISU staff after a three-year stint at Northern Illinois, where he served as the Huskies' event manager and football travel coordinator. Deterding managed all the event operations for all 17 NIU sports, while handling all the scheduling of athletic facilities.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to be back in the Missouri Valley Conference and to be at a school with a great reputation academically and athletically like Illinois State," Deterding said. "Bloomington-Normal is a great college community. It's an area I've become familiar with and one that I'm looking forward to become a part of."
Prior to working at NIU, the Denver, Iowa, native, worked a season at Virginia as the facility and event coordinator. With the Cavaliers, Deterding supervised donor parking and handled guest relations during football game-days. He also organized contracts for facility usage by external groups.
In July 2002, Deterding began a ticket operations internship at James Madison. Assisting in every facet of ticketing, the internship marked Deterding's return to intercollegiate athletics. Before James Madison, he worked four years away from college athletics.
His athletics career began in August 1994, when he started his first of three seasons as a basketball manager at Northern Iowa. He also assisted then-head coach Eldon Miller with basketball camps.
He earned a bachelor degree in public administration from Northern Iowa in 1998, while completing his master's degree in exercise and sport science from Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2002. He married the former Nikki Wiles in 2002.
