NORMAL, Ill-- -
Senior Suzy Turner and sophomore Scott Krapf were the top finishers for the Illinois State women's and men's cross country teams, respectively, as each finished in seventh-place at the Illinois Intercollegiate Championships held at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., Friday.
The ISU women's team placed second, out of 20 teams, behind nationally-ranked No. 6 Illinois. The Redbird men placed third, out of 22 teams, behind Illinois and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2006 cross country champions Rend Lake Junior College.
Head coach Jeff Bovee was pleased with both the men's and women's team performances and felt that the meet was a success.
"I think that the progress our teams' have made in one year is amazing," said Bovee. "We are working to improve one meet at a time and the amount of improvement that we have made today shows how our program is really making a name for itself."
The Redbird women were paced by Turner, Kathleen Thompson (18:21.85), Stacey Turilli (18:26.26), Jess Husted (18:35.55), Sarah Glowacki (18:35.90) and Kim Ebbesen (18:49.02), as each finished in the top-25.
Bovee was impressed with the performance of the Redbird women and the leadership provided by Turner and Turilli.
"The women really looked good and packed together well," said Bovee. "Suzy (Turner) is a smart racer and has good foot speed and Stacey (Turilli) really stepped up and is really running strong."
On the men's side, finishing just behind Krapf were Jordan Anderson and Matt Mroczynski, who were eighth and ninth, respectively. To round out ISU's top-five were Mike Richardson in 18th and Jon Roberts finishing in 24th place.
"I think that we are really making progress with our men's team," said Bovee. "The guys ran well together through the first 3K which shows that they are really learning how to run as a team."
ISU will compete again on Sept. 22 at the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill., at 10 a.m.
Note: Men's individual results will be reported later due to technical difficulty.
