True freshman Terra Miller led the way for the Redbirds as Illinois State finished day one of the Napa River Cardinal Cup, at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky. in eighth place after firing a 613 as a team.
Four Redbirds placed in the top-40 and Miller's two-round-total of 152 (76, 76) paced Illinois State as it crept up the leader board throughout the day. Junior co-captain Marci Hill continued her consistent play firing a two-round-total of 153 (75, 78). Sophomore Stacey Miller's two-round-total of 155 (75, 80) and sophomore Britt Knutson's two-round-total of 156 (79, 77) also landed each of them in the top-40 following day one action.
Head coach Darby Sligh feels her team can make a strong push towards the top of the leader board on day two.
"I am extremely pleased with the way we played today," said Sligh. "I think our girls have shaken off the rust from the summer and are ready to play well not only tomorrow, but the rest of the fall as well."
Notre Dame leads the 17-team event after recording a team score of 582. The individual event is also led by a member of the Fighting Irish as freshman So-Hyun Park fired a two-round-total of 141 (70, 71).
The Napa River Grill Cardinal Cup concludes with 18-holes Tuesday, Sept. 18. Tee times are set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
