TERRA HAUTE, Ind. - Illinois State opened competition at the Sycamore Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 22, against players from Indiana State and Xavier. Senior Carolyne Parent won her match to advance her to the semifinals of the Flight 2 singles draw, however, many of the other `Birds struggled through their matches.

"Today didn't go particularly well for us," said head coach Chris Hoover. "However, we didn't play well on the first day in the Billiken Tournament and we still ended up on top."

Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard advanced to the semifinals by default to play against Jennifer Migan (Indiana State) in the Flight 1 Singles. Parke-Bedard was defeated by Migan, 6-1, 6-4 and will be facing fellow teammate senior Katri Miller for third place tomorrow.

Miller defeated Tifanie Treece of Xavier, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (6-3) to then lose against Sarah Meghoufel (Indiana state) in the semifinals 6-4, 6-2 of the Flight 1 Singles. Sophomore Julia Zubkova also competed in the Flight 1 Singles, losing her first match to Migan 6-3, 6-1. Later Zubkova defeated Kaitlyn Zinn (Xavier), 6-3, and will play against Treece tomorrow for fourth place.

Parent defeated Zinn 6-3, 6-3 in the Flight 2 Singles and will face Fadzai Masiyazi (Indiana State) tomorrow in the semifinals. Also, in the Flight 2 Singles, junior Tanja Hrovatic was defeated by Joanne Schickerling (Indiana State) 6-2, 6-2, and will play Jill Ducro (Xavier) tomorrow.

Freshman Katie O'Riley played against Annie Diadalis (Xavier) and won 6-4, 6-1 in the Flight 3 Singles. Sophomore Carmen Peters also played in this flight, losing to Christie Pleiman (Xavier) 6-4, 6-1.

The doubles competition was as equally difficult as the singles matches. Miller and Parke-Bedard teamed up to defeat Jeannette Feider and Kaitlyn Zinn (Xavier) 8-4. They then lost to Masiyazi and Meghoufel (Indiana State), 8-6. Zubkova and O'Riley also beat Kara Courtney and Aylin Seyalioglu (Xavier), 8-2 in their first doubles match. They were defeated by Schickerling and Migan in their second match 8-3. Hrovatic and Parent partnered for today's competition and lost to Schickerling and Migan, 8-5. However in their next match they beat Courtney and Seyalioglu 8-5. Miller and Parke-Bedard will compete against Zubkova and O'Riley tomorrow for third place.

"Although today was difficult it is the type of competition that we need to prepare us for the MVC Invitational and that is my main concern," said Hoover.

Action concludes in the Sycamore Invitational on Sunday.
