Women's Tennis Dominates in Day One of MVC Championship

OMAHA, Neb. - Illinois State opened competition at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship on Friday, Sept. 28, against players from each university in the Valley. Redbirds won every singles and doubles match they competed in today, advancing them to the semifinals tomorrow.

Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard began the day's competition defeating Emily Regenold (BU), 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, in Flight 1. Tomorrow Parke-Bedard will face Torrie Browning (WSU) in the semifinals. Senior Katri Miller competed in Flight 2 and defeated Irina Kalashnikova (DU), 6-2, 6-3. Miller will compete against Sampada Kanade (UNI) tomorrow.

Junior Julia Zubkova continued the Redbirds' success in Flight 3. Zubkova played Kari Sloboth (DU) and won, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Senior Carolyne Parent faced Leesa Cadwallader (SU) in Flight 4 and defeated her 6-1, 6-0. Tomorrow Zubkova will face Kate Chybowski (UE), while Parent plays Fadzai Masiyazi (ILS). Parent competed against Masiyazi in last week's Sycamore Invitational and won.

Freshman Katie O'Riley played an impressive match against Rachelle Shoji (CU) beating her 6-0, 6-0, and will now face Carolina Hannes (UNI) in the semifinals of Flight 5.

Junior Tanja Hrovatic and sophomore Carmen Peters both competed in Flight 6. Hrovatic played Jamie Petty (UE) and won, 6-1, 6-0, while Peters competed against Amanda Taillefer (SIU) and also won, 6-1, 6-4. Hrovatic will face Kim Braun (BU) and Peters will play Diana Mendez (UNI) in tomorrow's competition.

In the doubles competition, Parke-Bedard and Miller teamed up to defeat Sabine Tsala and Jessica Flannery (SIU), 8-4, in the Flight 1 match. Tomorrow they will play Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling (ILS).

Zubkova and O'Riley partnered to beat Sarah Plowman and Kari Sloboth (DU), 8-1, and will face Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader (CU) in the Flight 2 Doubles tomorrow.

Parent and Hrovatic received a bye for the first round of the Flight 3 Doubles. They will compete in the semifinals tomorrow against Nicole Miller and Erin Krubeck (BU).

With all of the Redbirds advancing to the semifinals, head coach Chris Hoover is excited about tomorrow's competition.

"It was a great day today," said Hoover. "We did exactly what we needed to do for the first day and now we just need to repeat ourselves tomorrow."

Action continues in the State Farm MVC Individual Championship on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
