After advancing to the semifinals, the `Birds faced harder competition at the State Farm MVC Individual Championship on Saturday, Sept 29. Despite the difficulties, sophomore Julia Zubkova and freshman Katie O'Riley partnered up to advance the Redbirds to the final round of the Flight 2 Doubles.
In singles, senior Véronique Parke-Bédard faced off against Torrie Browning (WSU) and lost, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2. Tomorrow Parke-Bedard will play against Meghana Paritala (UNI) for the third place spot.
Senior Katri Miller and junior Julia Zubkova, both took home wins today. Miller defeated Sampada Kanade (UNI), 6-4, 6-2, in the Flight 2 draw, while Zubkova beat Kate Chybowski (UE), 6-0, 6-4, in Flight 3. Miller will play Sarah Meghoufel (INS) and Zubkova will face Joanne Schickerling (INS) tomorrow for the title.
Tomorrow senior Carolyne Parent will try for third place against Sarah Plowman (DU), after losing a hard fought match to Fadzai Masiyazi (INS), 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), in Flight 4.
"Although Parent lost the match she fought extremely hard," said head coach Chris Hoover. "It really could have gone either way."
Katie O'Riley will also try for third place in Flight 5, after being defeated by Carolina Hannes (UNI), 6-2, 6-4. O'Riley will face Agata Skorupska (SIU).
Junior Tanja Hrovatic and sophomore Carmen Peters both competed in Flight 6. Hrovatic will advance to the finals after beating Kim Braun (BU), 6-1, 6-0. Peters lost to Diana Mendez (UNI), 6-4, 6-3, and now Peters will face Braun for third, while Mendez faces Hrovatic for first.
Tomorrow the `Birds will compete for two of the three Doubles championship titles. Parke-Bedard and Miller lost today to Jennifer Migan and Joanne Schickerling (INS), 8-5, in Flight 1, and will play Torrie Browning and Olga Elkin (WSU) tomorrow. Zubkova and O'Riley displayed an outstanding performance defeating Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader (CU), 8-2. Parent and Hrovatic also did well, beating Nicole Miller and Erin Krubeck (BU), 8-4. In tomorrow's competition, Zubkova and O'Riley will face Meghoufel and Masiyazi (INS) while Parent and Hrovatic play Paritala and Mendez (UNI).
Overall, the Redbirds will advance to five of the nine finals in the State Farm MVC Individual Championship.
"Today we didn't play as we had hoped to," said Chris Hoover. "But we still have a chance to take home over half of the titles in the tournament, and I think we can make it happen."
Action concludes in the State Farm MVC Individual Championship on Sunday with the `Birds playing for five of nine championship titles.
