The Illinois State swimming and diving team opened its season at Horton Pool Saturday morning by hosting the annual Red-White scrimmage. Swimmers Suzanne Almeida, Lindsay Dinkelman and Amy Schaefer each walked away with first-place finishes in their respective events. The scrimmage ended with the white team defeating the red team, 149-to-131.
Almeida, a junior, recorded a first-place tally in both the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke events and Dinkelman won the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke events. Schaefer, a freshman, turned heads as she took first-place finishes in the 100-and 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard individual medley.
Head coach Steve Paska was very happy with several individual performances.
"After the first three weeks of practice, we are moving in the right direction," said Paska. "I took quite a few positive things from at least one or two events for each member of the team.
"It was a very eventful day for us in the pool. This scrimmage will get the team to focus and gain intensity for the upcoming meets next weekend."
The divers also had a strong start to the season in the one-and three-meter boards.
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann was pleased with their performances.
"I am happy with the result of the scrimmage and how everyone competed," said Hoffmann. "It was a great benchmark for them to gage where they are and where they need to go."
Although coach Paska was impressed by individual and team performances, he said there was still more work to be done heading into the upcoming season.
"The team impressed me in many areas today", Paska said. "After evaluating the performances we still have some areas to improve on before the Notre Dame Relays next Friday and our meet against Northern Iowa next Saturday".
The swimming and diving team will compete at Notre Dame Friday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 p.m. and at Northern Iowa Sat., Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
