Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season At Billiken Classic

Sept. 6, 2007

NORMAL, Ill. - Redbird women's tennis head coach Chris Hoover and his team are set to begin their fall season on Friday, September 7, at the Billiken Fall Classic in St. Louis, Mo. The Classic will consist of singles and double competition at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center. Action is set to begin Friday at 9:30 a.m. and the Classic continues on Saturday and Sunday.

Last year the Redbirds concluded their season with a 13-9 record. This year the `Birds hope to improve their record and ultimately come home with the Missouri Valley Conference Champions title, which they have obtained five times in the past seven years

Last season, the Redbirds faced tough competition, which ultimately ended in very close losses. This season, Hoover hopes to continue to improve on their strengths from last year.

"We are excited to start this tournament and gauge where we stand with the competition," said Hoover. "Ultimately we are just excited to get out there and play some tennis."

Returning to the team this season will be seniors Katri Miller, Carolyne Parent, Véronique Parke-Bédard, junior Tanja Hrovatic, and sophomore Julia Zubkova. With three returning seniors, Hoover hopes their leadership will guide the team through the season.

Also, sophomore transfer Carmen Peters from Frankfurt Germany, freshman Katie O'Riley from McAllen, Texas and freshman Andrea Muresan from Lincolnshire, Ill. will join the Redbird team.

"This tournament, I'm just really seeing what the new players have," said Hoover. "This is going to be the first real test,"
