Women's Tennis Compete In First Day of Billiken Fall Classic

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois State women's tennis team opened play at the Billiken Fall Classic on Friday, September 7. The Redbirds faced players from both St. Louis University and Murray State. Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard won two matches to advance to the finals of the Blue Draw.

"Today was an okay day. We had some ups and some downs," said head coach Chris Hoover. "Hopefully tomorrow we will have more ups then downs."

Parke-Bedard defeated Tara Grant of St. Louis in a tie breaker in the first round, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). She then went on to beat Amanda Hellberg from St. Louis 6-3, 6-4.

Senior Carolyne Parent was the Redbirds only winner in the first round of the White Draw. Parent beat St. Louis' Rachel McCullagh in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Also in the White Draw, junior Tanja Hrovatic, freshman Katie O'Riley and sophomore Carmen Peters all lost in the first round.

The only Redbird doubles team in action on Friday won its first round match. Parent and Hrovatic teamed up to beat McCaullagh and Caitlin McKenna, 8-4. They will play a second round match tomorrow along with Redbird duos of O'Riley and sophomore Julia Zubkova, and Parke-Bedard and senior Katri Miller, who received first round byes.

Action continues in the Billiken Fall Classic on Saturday and concludes Sunday.
