Redbirds Advance to the Quarterfinals on Day One

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After winning doubles titles at the Ball State Invitational, the pairs of Daniel Tobar and Skip Span , Timon Reichelt and Filip Miljevic continued their success at the Louisville Invitational in Louisville, Ky., Friday. As Illinois State's two doubles tandems advanced to the quarterfinals at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.

Junior Michael Hobson and Xavier Riart-Ferrer also advanced to the quarterfinals in singles play.

In Flight A, the duo of Reichelt and Miljevic outplayed Joshua Smith and Mpiloenhle Migogo of Indiana State, 9-8, to qualify for the quarterfinals. Tobar and Span defeated DePaul's Vanja Grgec and Juan Xavier Munoz, 8-6, to move ahead to the Flight B quarterfinals.

Freshman Micah LeMoine partnered with Riart-Ferrer in Flight C doubles, where they fell to Skyler Engel and Leonard Henriques (Toledo), 8-1, in the first round.

In singles action, Hobson defeated Skyler Engel (Toledo), 6-0, 6-3, in the second round of Flight D singles, to advance to the quarterfinals. He is expected to play Eric West of Southern Illinois.

Riart-Ferrer won his first match against Rob Fox of Cleveland State, 6-3, 7-6, then outlasted Anthony Palmenter (Xavier), 7-6(4), 7-6(5), to make it to the quarterfinals.

During Flight A singles, Reichelt defeated Cory Paluch (South Dakota), 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to the second round. He then fell to Robert Rotaru (Louisville) 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

In Flight B, Span topped Wade Kippley of South Dakota, 6-1, 6-2, in first round play. Henrik Willers (Lander) beat Span in the second round, 6-3, 7-6 (4), to advance. Miljevic, LeMoine, and Tobar dropped to the consolation brackets as they lost in the first round of singles play.

"It was an okay day, we didn't play our best," said head coach Cris James. "We were up against tough teams. I was disappointed that we got off to a slow start in doubles this morning. I need to make sure we are doing the right things to get mentally and physically prepared before competition."

Illinois State continues play in Louisville with quarterfinal play on Saturday.
