GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Junior Stacey Miller shot a third-round total 1-over-par 72 for the second day in a row, while firing a 54-hole total 5-over-par 218 (74-72-72) and claimed individual medalist honors at the Starmount Fall Classic Tuesday. Miller and the Illinois State women's golf team finished the tournament with a team total of 929 (313-310-306), and a ninth-place finish at the Starmount Country Club.
The win was the Bloomington, Ill., native's first time receiving individual medalist honors and her first top-five finish of her collegiate career.
"Stacey played solid golf and she did not make mistakes," said head coach Darby Sligh. "She played more aggressively during this tournament, and that is what she needs to continue to do. Her consistency today is what solidified the victory for her. All of the other players in the field were unable to keep their pace by the end of the day, and Stacey really stayed leveled. It is nice to see her being rewarded for her hard work, and the team is very proud of her."
ISU improved from 12th place on day one to conclude the tournament in ninth place, and firing their best team 18-hole score (306) of the tournament.
"In order to be successful, we need to get everyone on the same page in each tournament, and we were able to do that today," said Sligh. "The first two days, we did not play how we wanted to, but today we shot a 306, which was our best round of the tournament. We played strong and did not give up. Stacey Miller and Laura Harris played very well in the tournament, and we need them to do that in order to win. So, hopefully, they will be able to continue that throughout the rest of the season."
Harris carded one birdie on the final 18-holes, while shooting a 3-over-par 74 on day three, and finished in a tie for 32nd place with a total score of 232 (79-79-74). Junior Britt Knutson also finished the tournament in the top-50, with a three-round total of 235 (80-77-78) and a tie for 39th place.
Sophomore Terra Miller finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 244 (80-82-82), while freshman Jackie Leonard shot a day-three 18-hole total of 87, while finishing the tournament with a 255 (86-82-87).
UNC-Greensboro took first-place receiving a team score of 894, while East Carolina took second-place in a scorecard tiebreaker with UNC-Greensboro. UNC-Wilmington took third-place with a 54-hole team total of 901. ISU finished the tournament ahead of East Tennessee State (930), Augusta State (935), Miami (937), Elon (943), Mississippi State (945) and Winthrop (959).
Ana Lucia Martinez from UNC-Greensboro helped her team capture first place with a hole-in-one on No. 10 Tuesday. It was also the first win for UNC-Greensboro since September 2000.
The Redbirds' final fall campaign will be Oct. 27-28 at the Ross Resorts Invitational in Southern Pines, N.C. The tournament will be held at the Pine Needles Golf Club.
