ISU to Conduct `Got 16?' Seminar at Springfield High School

Oct. 20, 2008

NORMAL, Ill. - In an effort to reach more high school student-athletes, the Illinois State Athletics Compliance Office announced that it will be conducting a "Got 16?" NCAA initial-eligibility seminar from 7-9 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, at the Springfield High School Auditorium in Springfield, Ill.

Associate Athletics Director for Compliance Cindy Harris and her staff are in their fifth year presenting this seminar at various locations around Central Illinois. This year's seminar, hosted by Springfield High School is the second such presentation that has been held in the Springfield area.

"We are happy to be presenting this seminar again in the Springfield area," said Harris. "Springfield is an area with a talented pool of college-bound student-athletes from within the city, as well as the many surrounding communities. The NCAA's recent increase in requirements continues to be a bit of a nemesis not only to the student-athletes and their parents, but to those who advise them. It is our goal to alleviate some of the confusion surrounding these topics and assist as many people as we can in having a better understanding of them."

The seminar is geared toward high school student-athletes, coaches, parents, athletics directors and guidance counselors. Topics that will be covered in the presentation include NCAA core courses, test scores (ACT and SAT), registering for the NCAA Eligibility Center, official visits, strategies and perspectives and improving test scores.

"We want to emphasize that the seminar is open to any student-athlete, coach, parent, or guidance counselor from any high school," said Harris. "Springfield High School has graciously stepped forward to host us; however, we hope that word is spreading that it is open to all."

This event has been approved by the Illinois State Department Board of Education to award two Continuing Professional Development Unit (CPDU) credits for attendance at this event.

Additional information on the "Got 16?" seminar may be obtained by contacting the compliance office at 309/438-2677 or via e-mail at caharri@ilstu.edu.
