Mroczynski Interview
Oct. 21, 2008
ST.LOUIS -
Illinois State sophomore Matt Mroczynski was named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office Tuesday. This is Mroczynski's first Valley honor this season and the second of his career.
For a second time this season, Mroczynski led the Redbird cross country team to a 24th-place finish in a field of 40 teams at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday. Mroczynski crossed the finish line with a time of 24:39.10 to finish 69th out of 267 competitors in the men's White 8k race.
Illinois State head cross country coach Jeff Bovee feels that this week's honor is well deserved.
"I actually think Matt had a better race at Notre Dame (Oct. 3), but he still had a good race at Pre-Nationals, being the first Valley finisher in a very loaded field," said Bovee. It has been a great season for Matt, and it is the beginning of some great things for him, not only this year, but in his career at ISU. I am just proud of him and excited for him to get some recognition for all of his hard work."
The Redbird junior varsity squad will compete in a dual meet against the Illinois junior varsity team Friday at the Illinois Arboretum in Urbana, Ill. The first race is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
