IOWA CITY, Iowa - Junior Stacey Miller shot a 12-over 156 and helped put the Illinois State women's golf team in fourth place after the first day of the Hawkeye Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course Saturday. The Redbirds fired a 36-hole team score of 627 (317-310), while Miller led the team with two rounds of 78 and was in 18th place.

Illinois State shot a 317 in the opening round and were in fifth place at the par-72, 6,202-yard course, but the Redbirds improved seven strokes and moved up a spot in the second round.

"We are struggling to execute and finish each hole," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We are not playing up to our potential right now, but when we do the sky is the limit. We need to quit making small mistakes, but it is a process and we are learning from those mistakes. Once we get all of the mistakes cleared up, we are on the verge of breaking out."

Junior Christine Larson shot a second-round, three-over-par 75, which placed her in a six-way tie for 20th place and a two-round total 157 (82-75). Junior Britt Knutson shot a two-round total 158 (77-81) and was in a nine-way tie for 26th place. Junior Laura Harris finished day one in a three-way tie for 35th place, while shooting a 15-over par 159 (81-78). Senior Marci Hill carded a 160 (81-79) and was in a six-way tie for 38th place.

Freshman Jackie Leonard scored a second-round 174 (89-85) as she competes individually at the tournament.

ISU sits behind Missouri Valley Conference rival Northern Iowa (614), the third place team, but they finished day one above Bradley (634) and Drake (634), who were tied for eighth place. Another Valley member, Creighton (663) ended the 36-holes in 15th place.

The tournament concludes Sunday with the final 18-holes scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
