Lewis Named Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Dec. 17, 2008

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior center Nicolle Lewis was named the Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Wednesday, Dec. 17. It was the second-career honor for Lewis, who received the award as a sophomore.

Lewis recorded her fourth-career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds and had three blocks to lead ISU to a comeback victory over Green Bay last weekend, 60-49. It was Lewis' third-consecutive game scoring in double-figures and she had a career-best 10 defensive rebounds. The Wind Lake, Wis., native has a 3.54 cumulative grade-point average (GPA) in exercise science.

"Prairie Farms and its family of dairies have been the only sponsors of this worthwhile endeavor by the Missouri Valley Conference," said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 21st year with The Valley. "We are grateful for Prairie Farms continued recognition of our student-athletes for their athletic performance and academic success."

Lewis is the third Redbird to receive an MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award this season, joining women's soccer player Mel Routledge (10/28) and teammate Kristi Cirone (12/4). Drake men's basketball player Josh Young was the male recipient for the week.

The Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is in its ninth year and seeks to acknowledge student-athletes in the Valley for their athletic and academic achievements. To qualify for the award, student-athletes must carry a GPA of at least 3.00, have completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to their academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performances for a one-week period.
