ST. LOUIS -
Illinois State senior guard Kristi Cirone was named the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. It was the seventh scholar-athlete honor of Cirone’s career.
Cirone, a senior from Chicago, averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game and shot 48.3 percent from the field (14-of-29) in two games for the Redbirds. Cirone, who has a 3.49 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, scored a game-high 19 points in the Redbirds’ victory over Ball State and added 20 points and nine assists versus DePaul. She moved into fourth place on the ISU career scoring list (1,573 points) and became the fifth player in school history to record 500 or more career assists.
“Prairie Farms and its family of dairies have been the only sponsors of this worthwhile endeavor by the Missouri Valley Conference,” said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 21st year with The Valley. “We are grateful for Prairie Farms continued recognition of our student-athletes for their athletic performance and academic success.”
The Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week award is in its ninth year and seeks to acknowledge student-athletes in the Valley for their athletic and academic achievements. To qualify for the award, student-athletes must carry a GPA of at least 3.00, have completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to their academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performances for a one-week period.
Creighton men’s soccer player Seth Sinovic was the male recipient for the week.
