The Illinois State women's tennis team opened play against the Nebraska Huskers on Friday, February 1. The `Birds faced difficult competition in Nebraska and were unable to come out with a win, ending the match at Nebraska 1, Illinois State 0.
The senior `Birds had a difficult time leading the Redbirds during this tough competition. Senior Katri Miller competed at the No. 1 singles position against Nebraska's Imke Reimers, and lost 6-2, 7-5. Senior Veronique Parke-Bedard also fell to Wiveca Swarting (NU) 6-2, 6-2.
Sophomore Julia Zubkova, who finished last season at the 10-3 mark, lost in a hard fought match against Jana Albers (NU), 4-6, 6-4, (10-5). Other senior Carolyne Parent, also was defeated by Stephanie Evans (NU), 6-3, 7-5.
Junior Tanja Hrovatic competed at the No. 5 position and lost to Amber Chandronnait (NU), 6-3, 6-3. Lastly, freshman Katie O'Riley competed at the No. 6 position and also lost against Abby Buxton (NU), 6-0, 6-1.
The doubles competition was just as difficult for the Redbirds. Miller and Zubkova faced Reimers and Albers and lost, 8-2. Parke-Bedard and O'Riley competed for the first time and lost against Swarting and Maria Ring (NU), 8-5. In the No. 3 position, Hrovatic and Parent faced Chandronnait and Evans and lost 8-6.
The Redbirds will face Colorado State at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2 at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
