Koshman Two-Time MIC Gymnast of the Week

Feb. 13, 2008

NORMAL, Ill. - For the second time this season, Illinois State junior co-captain Meaghan Koshman was named the Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) gymnast of the week, the league office announced Wednesday. Koshman received the award for her three career-best routines against Rhode Island last Friday in Horton Field House.

Koshman was the top all-around performer, scoring a career-best 39.100. The Regina, Saskatchewan native won the vault and set another career-best with a near-perfect score of 9.900. Koshman is leading the conference on the vault, with an average score of 9.845.

The next event for the Redbirds was the uneven bars, another first-place finish for Koshman and a career-best score of 9.825. Koshman received a 9.775 on the balance beam, putting her in third-place in the event. On the floor routine, Koshman scored a 9.600.

Head coach Bob Conkling was proud of Koshman and felt she deserved the award.

"Meaghan (Koshman) is a co-captain and has done a lot for the team," said Conkling. "I think the award is an excellent honor and she deserves it. She has been working through injuries the last few meets, and she is still setting personal records. I am proud of her and her achievements so far this season."

Other MIC gymnasts to hold the honor of gymnast of the week were Sandra Blake from Southeast Missouri State, Annie Kachman from UIC and Mollie Blessing of Texas Woman's University.

The Redbirds head to Alaska for a two-meet weekend against host Alaska-Anchorage Feb. 15-17. The team will compete at 10 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. on Sunday. It will be the first time this season the team will compete twice in the same weekend.
