SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
Redshirt sophomore Joe Emerich fired a three-round-total of 221 (72, 72, 77) to finish in a tie for 18th place, while leading the Illinois State men's golf team to a 12th place finish at the UTSA Oak Hills Intercollegiate at Oak Hills Country Club Tuesday.
Emerich's final round 77 made him one of four Redbirds to record a final round in the 70's as true freshman Jeff Kellen tallied a 72, junior Ben Murphy carded a 73, and sophomore Tommy Bliefnick posted a 78.
"We had some very good rounds today, but unfortunately we were not able to pick up any spots on the leader board," said head coach Ray Kralis. "I thought our guys did a nice job of competing today but we still have to improve on some little things if we want to contend."
As a team, the Redbirds closed out the event with a three-round-team-total of 904 (302, 302, 300). Although Illinois State improved on each of Monday's team-totals, the `Birds were unable to make up any ground on the rest of the 17-team field.
Mississippi State was able to expand on the lead it secured Monday, however, and rolled to a nine-stroke victory over Texas Tech with a three-round-team-total of 864 (292, 275, 297). Along with the team title, the Bulldogs also claimed individual medalist honors as Noah Goldman's three-round-total of 212 (73, 64, 75) was good enough to earn him a one-shot victory.
The Redbirds return to action Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 25-26 as they head to Pensacola, Fla. to compete in the Argonaut Invitational hosted the University of West Florida. Tee times have yet to be announced.
