NORMAL, Ill. - Senior Carolyne Parent competed in the only tie-breaking match of the night, as the Illinois State women's tennis team took home a 5-2 win over Eastern Illinois on Friday, Feb. 29 at the Evergreen Racquet Club. This win puts the Redbirds at a 3-4 season record, while it dropped the Panthers to a 5-1 mark.

Senior Katri Miller played at the No. 1 singles spot against Sandra Sasidharan, who was ranked No. 1 in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll. Miller was topped by Sasidharan, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Julia Zubkova beat Hayley Homburg, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Parent competed at the No. 3 spot during her tie-breaking match, which ended in a loss to Abby Allgire, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.

"Carolyne has had tough, good matches every time we play a team," said head coach Chris Hoover. "She just hasn't had her break yet, but I am proud of the way she continues to hustle."

In the rest of singles play, senior Veronique Parke-Bedard topped Cara Huck, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 flight. Junior Tanja Hrovatic, also took home a win against Stephanie Harmazy, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 5 spot. Freshmen Katie O'Riley beat Carrie Larson, 6-3, 6-0, in flight No. 6.

In doubles play, Hoover was pleased with the Redbirds performance.

"We did really well at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots today," said Hoover. "Doing well in doubles is really going to be important for us in this season's competition."

The Redbirds were able to take home the point, after winning two of the three matches. Miller and Parke-Bedard competed at the No. 1 position and beat Natalie Martin and Homburg, 8-4. In the No. 2 flight, the duo of Zubkova and O'Riley were topped by Huck and Sasidharan, 8-4. Parent and Hrovatic helped earn the doubles point by beating Larson and Allgire, 8-4, in the No. 3 spot.

"I'm glad we were able to fit this match into our schedule," said Hoover. "Eastern Illinois always gives us a good fight, and I didn't want to go two weeks without a match."

The Redbirds will compete against Illinois-Chicago Saturday, March 8 in Oak Lawn, Ill. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
