Redbirds Sweep Doubles, Defeat Butler, 5-2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Illinois State Redbirds (1-2) took home their first win of the season Friday night. The `Birds secured the 5-2 win after sweeping the Bulldogs (0-5) in the doubles competition.

Senior Katri Miller and sophomore Julia Zubkova secured the No. 1 doubles win against the Butler of duo Gabriella Bobrowski and Natalie Jaimes, 9-7. Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard competed with freshman Katie O'Riley and topped Molly Casperson and Becky Jenkins, 8-5. In the No. 3 position, senior Carolyne Parent and junior Tanja Hrovatic completed the sweep with a win against Tiffany McLoughlin and Michelle Hawes, 8-6.

In singles play, the'Birds won four of the six matches. Miller took home the win at the No 1. spot, defeating Gabriella Bobrowski, 6-2, 6-0. Zubkova topped Molly Casperson in a tie-breaking match of 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). At the No. 3 position Parke-Bédard competed against Natali Jaimes, 6-4, 6-7 (0-7), 6-1. Parent lost in the third set against Becky Jenkins, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 4 position. Hrovatic got the last win of the day against Michelle Hawes, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Closing out singles play, O'Riley was defeated by Tiffany McLoughlin, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

The women's tennis team will remain in Indianapolis, Ind. to compete against IUPUI Saturday. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
