Tobar and Redbirds Top Charleston Southern, 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Daniel Tobar's victory at No. 5 singles clinched the Illinois State men's tennis team's 4-3 victory over Charleston Southern, on Tues., March 11, in Charleston, S.C. The win moved the Redbirds to 6-3 on the season and pushed their winning streak to five matches.

In singles, Tobar brought home the win for the Redbirds by winning his match in its third set. As the last match in action with the Redbirds and Buccaneers tied at three, Tobar defeated Chris Peek at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 4-6, 5-2.

"Daniel played rather well," said head coach Cris James. "He handled the pressure very well and won in a very convincing manner."

The Redbirds also had victories at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions. At the No. 2 spot, senior Luka Marinkovic beat Guy David, 6-4, 6-2. Playing at the No. 5 position, freshman Filip Mijevic bested Luis Maselli, 6-0, 6-2.

"We looked good today," said James. "All six of our players competed very hard. Everybody put themselves in a position to win, even the matches we lost, we were in it until the end."

In doubles, Illinois State took two of the three matches to take the doubles point. At the No. 2 position junior Nuno Jacinto and sophomore Xavier Riart-Ferrer beat Steven Dean and Peek, 9-7. The Redbird's other doubles win came when Miljevic and sophomore Michael Hobson defeated Murat Atilla and Maselli at the No. 3 spot, 8-3.

"We were able to come out and get started quickly today," said James. "We had leads early in all three doubles matches. In one we let a seven-point lead slip, but the players found a way to regroup and win the match."

Illinois State returns to action Wednesday, March 12, at 1 p.m.taking on the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
