WAIPAHU, Hawaii -
The Illinois State women's tennis team brought home a win against Hawaii Pacific, 5-2, at the Central Oahu Regional Park on Tuesday, March 11 in Waipahu, Hawaii. Sophomore Julia Zubkova won both in singles and doubles bringing her spring season mark to 16-7 and it brought the Redbirds to a record of 4-6.
Hawaii Pacific currently holds a 7-2 mark due to the loss.
Senior Katri Miller defeated Ingrid Cseh, 6-3, 7-5, in No. 1 singles, while Zubkova beat Nina Mihova, 6-4, 6-2., at the No. 2 spot in one of her wins.
Head coach Chris Hoover was happy with Zubkova's improvement.
"Julia came off of a hard loss at Illinois Chicago and really came back and played well against DePaul and Hawaii Pacific," said Hoover.
Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard was topped by No. 36 Elena Hudzikova, 7-5, 7-5, at the No. 3 spot. Senior Carolyne Parent played at the No. 4 spot and was defeated by Tinka Mihova, 6-5, 7-5. At the No. 5 spot, junior Tanja Hrovatic beat Ralitsa Pirdopska, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Katie O'Riley also defeated Lauren Shin, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, the Redbirds swept Hawaii Pacific to get the point. Parke-Bedard and Miller defeated Cseh and Hudzikova, 8-3, in the No. 1 flight. The duo of Zubkova and O'Riley beat Mihova and Pirdopska, 8-6, at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 flight, Parent and Hrovatic beat the team of Shin and Mihova, 8-6.
"Today was one of our best performances," said Hoover. "We played well across the board, and winning the doubles point really helped us out."
The Redbirds will compete next against No. 1 BYU-Hawaii, on Friday, March 14 at 8 p.m. CST, in Laie, Hawaii.
