BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -
Junior Tanja Hrovatic's shutout victory helped set the tone for the Illinois State women's tennis team as they captured their first conference victory over Creighton, 7-0, on Friday, March 21 in Bloomington, Ill. at the Evergreen Racquet Club. The win gives the Redbirds a 1-0 mark for the Missouri Valley Conference and 6-7 overall, while the Bluejays have a 1-0 MVC mark and 5-5 overall.
Hrovatic's 6-0, 6-0, win over Rachelle Shoji at the No. 5 spot was one of six singles wins for the Redbirds on the day. Senior Katri Miller defeated Lindsey Erickson, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 1 flight. Junior Julia Zubkova earned her ninth win of the spring season, as she defeated Lauren Mastro, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Senior Véronique Parke-Bédard competed in flight No. 3 and beat Sarah Cadwallader, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Carolyne Parent, earned the last singles point for the `Birds as she beat Leesa Cadwallader, 6-2, 6-0.
The Redbirds took the doubles point as the duo of Miller and Parke-Bédard beat the Cadwallader twins, 8-3, at the No. 1 spot. Zubkova and Parent also won at the No. 2 spot against Erickson and Mastro, 8-3.
The Redbirds also picked up points at the No. 6 singles spot and the No. 3 doubles spot, by forfeit. Creighton was unable to fill the roster due to injuries.
Head coach Chris Hoover was excited about the Redbird's performance.
"It was really a great conference start for ISU," said Hoover. "We are looking forward to our next match against Saint Louis before we begin the seven conference matches that follow."
The Redbirds will host their third home match of the season against Saint Louis on Thursday, March 27. The match is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on The Gregory Street Tennis Courts, unless weather forces the match indoors to Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
