ST. LOUIS - Just five months after being tabbed Illinois State's male scholar-athlete of the year, junior forward Mike Vandello was named to the Missouri Valley Conference honorable mention scholar-athlete team, as announced by the league office Thursday. Vandello earned the honor for the second-consecutive season.
Vandello, a native of Bettendorf, Iowa, has a 4.0 cumulative grade-point-average in biological sciences. He has been named to the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll in each of the past three semesters.
This season, Vandello has appeared in 10 games, including three contests in Valley play. His last appearance was against host Northern Iowa (Jan. 20), when he played 11 minutes, scored two points, dished out two assists and had three rebounds. Vandello scored a season-high six points and had a season-best three assists against Southeast Missouri State (Nov. 14, 2007) at Redbird Arena.
A total of 16 student-athletes were honored as part of the 2008 MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams. Voting was conducted by league's sports information directors. The scholar-athlete nomination process parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Student-athletes must have reached sopho-more athletic and academic standing at their institution (true freshmen and redshirt freshmen were not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
