Zubkova Takes Home a Win as the Redbirds Fall to DePaul, 6-1

CHICAGO, Ill. - Illinois State women's tennis team lost to No. 51 DePaul, as sophomore Julia Zubkova, took home the only singles win, on Sunday, March 9 in Chicago, Ill. at the Lakeshore Athletic Club. The loss puts the Redbirds at a 3-6 spring season mark.

Zubkova beat Gergana Geneva, 6-2, 1-6,1-0 (10) at the No. 2 spot.

"Julia really played well today," said head coach Chris Hoover. "She really picked up from last night and came out with a win."

In the rest of singles play, senior Katri Miller fell to Dunja Antunovic, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. In flight No. 3, senior Carolyne Parent lost to Selma Salkovic, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Veronique Parke-Bedard was defeated by Katarina Milinkovic, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 spot. Junior Tanja Hrovatic competed at the No. 5 spot and lost to Beatrix Csordas, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Katie O'Riley lost to Kristen Gambrell at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles play the Redbirds were swept by DePaul. Miller and Parke-Bedard played at the No. 1 spot and lost to Salkovic and Csordas, 8-5. Zubkova and Parent lost to Gambrell and Antunovic, 8-3 in flight No. 2, while Hrovatic and O'Riley lost to Geneve and Anja Milhaldenic, 8-1, in the No. 3 spot.

"I came in knowing the DePaul is a really good team," said Hoover. "This was a tough way to start to the break, but I think we will be prepared for the Hawaii matches."

The Redbirds will compete against No. 22 Hawaii Pacific, Tuesday, March 11 at 9 p.m. CST.
