The Illinois State women's golf team stands in second place and trails Southern Illinois by just one stroke following first round action of the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship, hosted by Creighton at the Oak Hills Country Club. Three Redbirds finished day one tied for seventh as junior Tiffany Hockensmith, redshirt sophomore Marisa Milligan and sophomore Britt Knutson each posted round-one-totals of 77.
"Britt really came up big for us today and held things together," said head coach Darby Sligh. "Tiffany made a big birdie on 18 that will give her some confidence heading into tomorrow, and although Marisa has gotten off to a slow start for her, I am looking for her to have a great day tomorrow."
As a team, ISU posted a round-one-team-total of 311. Each of Illinois State's six competitors finished round one in the top-30 as junior Marci Hill is tied for 17th, sophomore Stacey Miller is tied for 20th and sophomore Laura Harris currently stands in a 27th place tie. Hill recorded a round-one-total of 80, Miller tallied an 81 and Harris carded an 83.
Although the Redbirds are just one shot off the lead, Sligh feels her team can improve on day two.
"We probably got off to our slowest start of the year," said Sligh. "I am very proud of the way we finished as a group today, but tomorrow is moving day for us so we will need to get off to a better start."
Southern Illinois currently leads the 54-hole event as the Salukis recorded a round-one-team-total of 310. Northern Iowa currently sits in third with a day-one-team-total of 314. Southern Illinois teammates Kate Laegeler and Kelly Gerlach share the individual lead as each posted opening-round-totals of 75.
Second round action gets underway Monday as the first tee time of the day is set for 12 p.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
