The Illinois State women's golf team took a one-shot lead over Southern Illinois heading into Tuesday's final round of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship at the par-71, 5,932 yard Oak Hills Country Club. The Redbirds posted a round-two-team-total of 305 and were led by junior co-captain Tiffany Hockensmith, who took the individual lead with a tournament-low, 1-over-par, 72.
Head coach Darby Sligh has been impressed with Hockensmith's effort through two days of competition.
"Tiffany has played exceptionally well, especially with the way she is finishing rounds," said Sligh. "She made three birdies down the stretch today that were huge for us in terms of being in the position we want to be heading into the final round."
Hockensmith has posted a two-round-total of 149 (77, 72) and currently leads Olivia Lansing (77, 73) of Drake by one stroke. As a team, ISU has posted a two-round-team-total of 616 (311, 305), and each of Illinois State's six competitors remains in the top-30.
Junior Marci Hill (80, 77) and redshirt sophomore Marisa Milligan (77, 80) are currently tied for 10th after posting two-round-totals of 157, while sophomores Laura Harris (83, 77) and Stacey Miller (81, 79) are each tied for 18th after firing two-round-totals of 160. Sophomore Britt Knutson (77, 87) currently sits in a 28th-place tie with a two-round-total of 164.
With just one round remaining, Sligh is pleased with the position her team has put itself in.
"We said today needed to be moving day for us, and the girls really responded," said Sligh. "We have a great opportunity tomorrow and hopefully a solid team effort today will give us the confidence we need heading into the final round. I know the girls are excited and looking forward to really playing well."
Tee times for Tuesday's final round are scheduled for 10 a.m. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
