Milligan Leads Redbirds on Day One of IU Invitational
CARMEL, Ind. - Redshirt sophomore Marisa Milligan is currently tied for 17th following first-day action at the Indiana Invitational, hosted by Indiana at the par-72, 5,938 yard Crooked Stick Golf Club. Milligan fired a two-round-total of 150 (312, 319), but was the only Redbird to finish the first two rounds in the top-20 as Illinois State is currently in 13th place following a two-round-team-total of 631 (312, 319).
"Marisa was consistent today for us as she has been all spring, but as a team we just did not have it today," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We struggled with our short game today, especially our putting."
Milligan, who is playing in just her fourth tournament as a member of the Illinois State squad, leads the team with a 75.3 per-round-scoring-average.
The Redbirds will look to gain some confidence in Tuesday's final round as they head into next week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships (Sunday-Tuesday, April 13-15).
"This is just one day for us," Sligh noted. "We have played well all year, but we need to sure up our short game tomorrow in order to get where we want to be heading into conference."
Purdue currently leads the 15-team field by 29 strokes as they posted a two-round-team-total of 561 (279, 282). The Boilermakers also claimed the day-one-individual lead as Junthima Gulyanamitta tallied a two-round-total of 135 (67, 68).
Tee times for the final round are scheduled for a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be made available at Golfstat.com.
