NORMAL, Ill. -
Illinois State head women's golf coach Darby Sligh has named junior Stacey Miller the 2008-09 recipient of the Helen Cushman Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to the women's golf team member who has shown academic excellence, golf expertise and a dedication to the game.
The Bloomington, Ill., native was a member of the 2007-08 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar team and will compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship in August.
"I am thrilled to be selected as the recipient of the Cushman Scholarship," said Miller. "I have been working hard in the classroom and on the golf course for the past two years, and have enjoyed being a part of the ISU golf program. I appreciate Coach Sligh selecting me for this award and look forward to growing as a golfer and as a student-athlete."
Sligh feels that Miller is a deserving recipient of the Cushman Scholarship.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to coach such a positive student athlete," said Sligh. "Stacey embodies this award in every way, and I think it is important to honor someone that pursues greatness both on and off the golf course."

Miller played in a team-high 30 rounds last season, and garnered both first-team All-Missouri Valley Conference and MVC Scholar-Athlete team honors. She had two top-ten finishes and one top-20 tally. Miller will compete in the U.S. Women's Amateur at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore., beginning Aug. 4.
The Helen Cushman Endowment Scholarship was established in 1995. Nina Chesebro created the scholarship to honor Helen Cushman, a long-time friend. Chesebro and her sister, Pat, built an amazing relationship with Helen over the years. Golf was one of the activities the women enjoyed doing together. The award is handed out annually to a worthy women's golf student-athlete.
The Helen Cushman Endowed Scholarship is one of 19 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes funded by private donors.
