Stalowy Awarded Fairchild Endowed Scholarship

July 30, 2008

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State senior infielder Mike Stalowy has been awarded the Raymond W. Fairchild Endowed Scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year. Stalowy started every game in 2008 and tied for the team lead in fielding percentage.

The endowment is given each year to a member of the baseball team and is named for former Illinois State University President Raymond W. Fairchild, who directed the university from 1933 to 1954. In addition to his steady performance on the field, Stalowy is a steady performer in the classroom and was one of 22 baseball players to earn a 3.0 grade-point average or higher in the fall.

Stalowy also serves as the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) secretary/treasurer.

"Mike's one of my favorite players because he comes to the ballpark ready to go, every day, and I think he's very deserving of the Fairchild Scholarship," Illinois State head coach Jim Brownlee said. "You try to pick people who will represent the institution both on and off the field and Mike does that very well. He's a baseball representative for the athletic council. He's active in a lot of things. He's a very well-rounded individual and he's very deserving of the award."

Stalowy hit .277 in 2008 with eight doubles and tied for the team lead after legging out three triples. Stalowy showed great discipline at the plate with a 35-to-27 walk to strikeout ratio and his .389 on-base percentage was fourth on the team.

As a defensive player, Stalowy was one of the steadiest members of the Redbird squad, committing just three errors and logging 435 putouts at first and third base.

The Raymond W. Fairchild Endowed Scholarship is one of 19 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes funded by private donors.
