Aug. 11, 2008

Redbird All-Access Exclusive
Redbird All-Access members, watch Maggie Krick's full interview (30 questions) on Redbird All-Access, your exclusive home to full student-athlete video interview's during this summer's "thirtysomething" series.

GoRedbirds.com: How has your summer been going? Do you have any plans for the summer before you return to school?
Maggie Krick: My summer has been really good. We've just been working out, a lot. I've also found time to lay by the pool. As far as before school starts, the only really exciting thing I have going is that I'm going to New York with my best friend from home and both of our moms for a girl's trip. But that's about it.

GR: What do you think has attributed to your success on the basketball court?
MK:I think the main thing I can say is hard work. In the off season, especially during the summer, just being in the gym when other people don't want to and making basketball your life.

REDBIRD ALL-ACCESS EXCLUSIVE - Maggie Krick "thirtysomething" interview

GR: The season hasn't started yet, but what is your outlook for the 2008-09 Redbirds?
MK:I'm very optimistic. I think we have a lot of expectations this year, but I think that it's a good thing to have a little pressure on us. I think it'll be a great season.

GR: Now that you have had some time to reflect on the success of last season, how did it feel to win the State Farm MVC Tournament and make it to the NCAA Tournament?
MK: It was awesome. It was probably my happiest basketball moment yet. The night that we won the State Farm MVC Tournament was a blast. Honestly, it's probably the most rewarding thing I've experienced in basketball.

GR: What are you doing this summer to continue practicing and improving your game for the upcoming season?
MK: Personally, I work a lot on footwork and keeping quickness and explosiveness. I also continue to work on things like ball-handling and shooting. Really, we (the team) just try to work on every facet of our game during the summer.

GR: You've proven yourself to be successful, both in the classroom and on the basketball court. Do you find it difficult to manage being a student and an athlete?
MK: It's really not. It hasn't been a huge struggle for me. I think the (Karin Bone) Athletics Student Center really helps. My freshman year, I had to have eight hours a week in the study center, so it just forced me to get really focused on my studies and school work because you don't really have anything else to do in there. It is a challenge when you miss class, but it hasn't been too difficult.

GR: When you aren't busy with practice, games and classes, what do you like to do during your free time?
MK: I just like to relax, watch TV and hang out with my teammates. We just like to do random things. We have a pool at our apartment right now, so every afternoon, if we have free time, a couple of teammates and I are always by the pool. But just stuff like that; normal things, I guess.

GR:What's playing on your iPod right now?
MK: Definitely some kind of country. Probably some kind of country like Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift or something like that.

GR: Your dad played basketball at Illinois Wesleyan. Has this impacted your basketball career at all?
MK: Yes it has, a lot. Not necessarily him playing at Illinois Wesleyan but him being someone that's into basketball . He's probably been the biggest influence in my basketball career.

GR: What/ who has been your biggest inspiration throughout your athletics career?
MK: I'd have to say my Savior. He is the one. Before a game, I say a Scripture in my head to keep myself going. He just shows me the kind of person that I want to be.

thirtysomething will return Aug. 14 with an interview with senior football player Jonathan St-Pierre.
