Kilborn Classic Slated for Aug. 24-25

Aug. 12, 2008

NORMAL, Ill. - The fourth annual Kilborn Classic golf outing will be held Aug. 24 -25, with proceeds benefiting the men's and women's golf programs at Illinois State. Potential participants are encouraged to register either as a single player, or as a group of two-to-four players, with the field limited to 72.

The event will kick off with a cocktail party, followed by an auction Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. at Crestwicke Country Club. On hand will be both men's and women's golf teams, along with ISU women's basketball coach Robin Pingeton as a guest speaker. Entertainment will be provided by card magician Butch Schoen.

"He's (Schoen) amazing...I've seen him over fifty times and I never get tired of watching him," said Tom Purtzer, PGA/Champions Tour player.

On Aug. 25, there will be an 18-hole tournament featuring a shambles format at the Weibring Golf Club of Illinois State University. In a shambles format, each player hits a tee shot for each hole and the best tee shot is selected. Then each player will place his or her own ball within one club of the tee shot selected no closer to the hole. From this point on, each player will play his or her own ball where it lies until the hole is complete. The team score chosen for the hole is the best net ball with their handicap figured in.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. A breakfast will be held prior to the golf outing, with a steak cook-out at the conclusion of play. ISU men's basketball coach Tim Jankovich will be the guest speaker on hand.

Harland Kilborn coached ISU to three Missouri Valley Conference Championship teams, produced 30 all-conference golfers and was a four-time MVC Coach of the Year before retiring in December 2004. Kilborn and fellow Redbird great D.A. Weibring began the D.A. Weibring Redbird Golf Classic in 1980. Over its 25-year run, the even has raised more than $1.4 million for Redbird golf.

Registration is $500, and includes two tickets for the cocktail party at Crestwicke Country Club, a playing spot in the Kilborn Classic, a commemorative gift basket (estimated retail value $239), breakfast before/during golf and steak dinner cook-out following the event.

Now, the Redbird Golf Kilborn Classic replaces the Weibring Golf Classic as the leading fundraiser for Redbird golf. For more information contact Annie Campbell at (309) 438-3803 or register online at ISUGolf.com.
