GoRedbirds.com: How does it feel to be an ISU student-athlete selected to do the "thirtysomething" feature on GoRedbirds.com?
Mary Hankosky: It feels like a pretty cool thing to be selected to do this. I've seen a lot of the other athletes that have done it, and it just seems kind of cool.
GR: What made you want to be part of Illinois State Athletics?
MH: Well, comparing it to other schools I looked at, they really look out for the athletes here. It also intrigued me coming here because it was an up-and coming-program in all sports. I just thought it would be fun to be a part of that.

GR:Do you have any rituals before you go into competitions?
MH:No, not really. I usually just put my iPod on and really think mentally about what I am going to compete in. That is about it.
GR: And what song is playing right now on your iPod?
MH: Just depends. There is no particular song, really; something upbeat.
GR: If you could play any sport, what would you play and why?
MH: I think football, because no girl has played football and I think it would be fun to tackle people.
GR: What is your biggest fear?
MH:Right now, getting injured during my senior year.
GR: What is your all time favorite movie?
MH: I would have to say "Finding Nemo" because it makes me laugh every time I watch it, even though I've seen it a million times.
GR: What is your biggest pet peeve?
MH:My biggest pet peeve is when people either chew their gum really loudly or when they chew in my ear ... my roommate does this to me a lot. She assumes I don't like things because I'm Alaskan. She'll say, "No, Mary doesn't like that." And I'll say, "No, I never said that." So that is probably my biggest pet peeve here at school.
GR: How does it feel to be co-captain of the team?
MH: Well, it is a new thing that I never thought I would be. But it is kind of cool. I'm really looking forward to leading the team and seeing what we can do this year.
GR: What is the best piece of advice you could give the three new members of the team?
MH: Probably just to live it up; don't take any day for granted because it goes by so fast. You are a freshman now, but it seems like it has gone by so fast. So live every day to the fullest because one day, you'll be done, too.
thirtysomething will return Aug. 11 with an interview with junior women's basketball player Maggie Krick.
