BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Illinois State junior Xavier Riart-Ferrer and freshman Skip Span continued play at the Indiana Hoosier Classic Saturday. Span advanced to the semifinals in singles, but a knee injury kept Riart-Ferrer from competing in singles play.
Riart-Ferrer and Span started the day in a consolation doubles match against Ra'ees Ismail and J.T. Torbeck (Xavier). The pair fell to Ismail and Torbeck, 8-2. Riart-Ferrer, who suffered a season ending knee-injury last March, was pulled out of his afternoon events due to swelling in his knee.
"Xavier had significant swelling around his knee," said head coach Cris James. "As a precaution we pulled him out of his afternoon singles match. Yesterday may have been too much impact for his knee."
In singles, Span bested Jonathan Schroeder (Indiana) in the quarterfinals of the Crimson Flight defeating him, 6-3, 6-3. Span fell, 6-4, 7-6, in the semifinals to Zeyad Montasser (Western Michigan). Span will compete Sunday morning in a singles consolation bracket.
"Skip played a close match against Western Michigan, said James. "He lost to a good competitor. I haven't seen Skip play a lot since he's a freshman. Now I know what we can focus on and do a better job coaching him this season."
