Illinois State sophomore Timon Reichelt and freshman Micah LeMoine went undefeated in singles competition Saturday the men's tennis team concluded day two of the Country Inn & Suites Invitational. Junior Michael Hobson ended the day 1-1 in singles play.
In Flight 8 of singles LeMoine outshined his competitors. In the first round of play LeMoine beat Dave Welkener of St.Louis, 6-1, 6-1. He went on to defeat Tim O'Brien (Illinois-Chicago) in a super tiebreaker that went 6-2, 1-6, (10-8)
"Micah played a tight second match against Illinois-Chicago," said Illinois State head men's tennis coach Cris James. "O'Brien is a long time friend of LeMoine's. He felt a little bit of pressure, but he pulled together and played tough."
Newcomer Reichelt picked up a bye in first round singles. In Flight 6 the Redbird defeated Illinois-Chicago's Nate Kirk, 6-3, 6-2. Reichelt went into round three with confidence as he shutout Mitch Osborne (Bradley), 6-0, 6 -0.
"Timon moved through his matches, taking care of business," said James.
In the first round of Flight 7 singles, Bryan Beasley of St. Louis defeated Hobson, 6-4, 6-3. After receiving a bye in the second round, Hobson went on to face Khaled Abou ouf (Illinois-Chicago) winning 6-3, 6-2 in the third round.
The Reichelt and LeMoine pair outplayed Bradley's Michael Macara-Chvili and Mitch Osborne, 8-2, in the final round of Flight 3 doubles Saturday. The Redbirds finished with a record of 2-2 in doubles competition to conclude doubles portion of the tournament.
The invite wraps up Sunday with the final rounds of singles play beginning at 9 a.m.
