LAWRENCE, Kan. -
After day one at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, the Illinois State women's golf team is currently in second place, trailing Oral Roberts (615) by two strokes. ISU shot a team total 617 in 36 holes of play. Junior Britt Knutson is leading the Redbirds, carding an 8-over-par 152 (77-75), and is currently tied for fourth place. The par-72 Alvamar Public Golf Course is measured at 6,242 yards.
The Redbirds were in first-place after the first 18-holes, but fell to second place in the ensuing round. ISU shot a 302 in the first round, and a 315 on the second set of 18-holes.
Head coach Darby Sligh hopes that the Redbirds can regain momentum and finish the tournament as strong as they started.
"It got really windy in the afternoon, and we lost focus coming down the stretch, but Terra Miller and Britt really stepped up and kept us in the tournament," Sligh said. "We are really close and on the edge for first place. We are excited to be in contention. We have not done that since the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament last spring, and are really looking forward to the rest of the tournament."
Junior Stacey Miller is currently tied for 10th place with a 155 (75-80). Junior Laura Harris and senior Marci Hill are currently tied for 23rd place with a 158. Harris carded a 4-over-par 76 on the first round, and an 82 for the second round. Hill tallied a 2-over-par 74 on the first 18-holes and an 84 in the second round. Rounding out the top-five for ISU was sophomore Terra Miller with a two-round total of 159 (81-78).
Junior Christine Larson is competing individually, and carded a 168 (83-85) in two rounds.
ISU is currently leading all fellow Missouri Valley Conference teams. Wichita State is currently in ninth place, while Northern Iowa finished the day in 13th place, and Creighton finished the 36-holes in 14th place.
The tournament will continue Tuesday with the final 18-holes scheduled for a shotgun start at 8 a.m.
