NORMAL, Ill. -
In conjunction with Saturday's community-sponsored "Worldwide Day of Play," the Illinois State Athletics Department will be offering complimentary tickets to Sunday's (Sept. 28) 2:05 p.m. home volleyball match against Bradley. Participants will have the opportunity to pick-up the tickets at any of the three sponsored locations in Bloomington-Normal.
The event, which is free to the public, runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Various events will be held at the uptown Children's Discovery Museum, Anderson Park and Tipton Park. The Worldwide Day of Play is being dubbed the official day to turn off all electrical items, get off the couch and go play.
Games and activities, such as a "Kiddie Boot Camp," an obstacle challenge, animal relay and "Simon Says" exercise will be available at the Children's Discovery Museum. At Anderson Park, a kickball home run competition, mini golf obstacle challenge, basketball and tennis activities will be on tap with Illinois State student-athletes. Participants will also have the opportunity to climb a rock wall with Upper Limits. Tipton Park's activities will include a home run derby, soccer shootout and a fun walk on the trail, plus other activities. Select Redbird student-athletes will also be on hand.
"We are excited to be involved with the `Worldwide Day of Play' again this year," said Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Promotions Brad Ledford. "The kids in our community will have a great opportunity to interact with Redbird student-athletes, while they continue to learn how to further remain active in their lifestyles. We also look forward to many of the same participants coming to Redbird Arena Sunday to watch our volleyball team take on Bradley."
Participants are encouraged to begin the "Worldwide Day of Play" at the American Heart Association's 2008 Start! Heart Walk at the Shoppes at College Hills. The Heart Walk raises funds to help fight heart disease and stroke, and includes live entertainment and a kid's zone.
The Redbird volleyball team will be meeting in-state rival Bradley for the 45th time in the all-time series. ISU, which has averaged 1,491 fans per home match this season, ranked 18th in the week four NCAA Division I attendance report.
