Redbird Scoring Runs Sink Missouri State, 68-56

NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's Lloyd Phillips and Emmanuel Holloway combined to score 30 points, with 15 points apiece, to lead four Redbirds in double-digit scoring, as ISU posted a 68-56 victory over Missouri State in Missouri Valley Conference action Sunday afternoon on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena.

The Redbirds (16-2 overall, 5-2 MVC) opened up the second half with a 9-2 run, which included three points apiece from Dinma Odiakosa and Phillips, and held a 38-26 lead at the 15:43 mark. Odiakosa ended the game with five points, but matched his career-high with 13 rebounds. With ISU leading 38-28, the Redbirds used a small 5-0 run to build a 15-point lead, 45-30, with 12:45 left in the game.

The Bears (8-10, 1-6 MVC) closed to within seven points once, at 48-41, with 7:32 remaining, but were not able to get any closer.

Missouri State jumped out to a 9-5 lead, as Chris Cooks (4) and Will Creekmore (5) accounted for all nine Bear points early in the first half. ISU responded with a 10-0 run, which included six points by Champ Oguchi on a pair of treys, to take a 15-9 lead with 13:25 left in the first half. Oguchi finished the game with 11 points, including a 2-for-2 effort on threes. Missouri State countered with an 8-0 spurt and took a 17-15 lead with 9:20 on the clock.

The Missouri State lead was short-lived, as the Redbirds followed with a 9-0 run to take a 24-17 lead, one that would never be relinquished, with 4:49 left in the frame. The two teams traded baskets and free throws to end the half, and the Redbirds led, 29-24, at the intermission.

Brandon Sampay came off the bench and collected his first-career double-double with 12 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Missouri State's Chris Cooks led all scorers with 20 points and Kyle Weems posted 12 points for the Bears.

Illinois State is back in action Wednesday night at Wichita State. The game tips off at 7:05 p.m.
