Illinois State's women's tennis team is set to open its spring season at home when it hosts IUPUI Friday at 7 p.m. on the courts of Evergreen Racquet Club.

"It is our first match of the spring season," said head coach Chris Hoover. "This is a growing year for us. I just want us to go out with the determination, will and fight to win. There is always someone who struggles in the first match, but I am counting on my veterans to keep the team focused and on track."

The last time the Redbirds met the Jaguars (0-1) was Feb. 9, 2008. The Redbirds closed out each match in two sets each, sweeping the Jaguars, 6-0. The doubles matches were not played due to time constraints. Illinois State leads the series record between the two teams, 5-0.

In their first match of the spring, the Jaguars fell to SIU-Edwardsville 7-0. IUPUI had to forfeit the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches due to only having five players for the match.

"We are still working on playing positions," said Hoover. "We are working hard to get all the cob webs out from the fall and start the spring off with a win."
