Women's Basketball Stats in PDF Format
NORMAL, Illinois - The Illinois State men's and women's basketball teams officially opened the 2009-10 season Friday night in front of 3,416 fans inside historic Horton Field House for the annual Redbird Hoopfest event.
Kellen Thornton led the Red team to a 41-29 victory in the men's scrimmage, while Jackie Carmichael led all scorers with 12 points. Carmichael was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, while Osiris Eldridge fired in seven points for the Black team.
The Black team led 19-18, but the Red team went on a 13-4 run, including five points by Thornton, to take control of the game. In addition to Thornton, Jeremy Robinson tossed in eight points for the Red team and Trey Blue, Lloyd Phillips and Austin Hill each tossed in six apiece.
Katie Broadway and Maggie Krick each poured in eight points apiece to lead the Black team to an 18-12 win over the Red team in the women's basketball team scrimmage. With the score knotted at 12-12, the Black team rattled off six-straight points, including four by Krick, to claim the win.
Ashleen Bracey led the Red team with seven points, while Nicolle Lewis grabbed five rebounds for the Black team to lead all players.
Eldridge and Bracey paired up to win the mixed three-point contest after posting 11 makes in the shootout round of the championship, downing Thornton and Krick. The two teams went to the shootout after each team sank 13 treys in the final round, but Thornton and Krick only tallied six threes in the bonus round.
Eldridge claimed the dunk title after an impressive dunk-off with Carmichael. The two Redbirds were tied after two rounds and both posted 50-point dunks in the tie-breaker. Carmichael was unable to throw down his dunk in the next round, while Eldridge notched another 50-point slam.
