Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day One of WMU Invitational
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Opening the tournament with all doubles action, the Illinois State men's tennis team ended day one of the Western Michigan Vredevelt Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich., with an 8-4 record. Head coach Cris James was very pleased with the energy level that the Redbirds brought to the courts today.
"Our main goal for today was to have a positive mentality during our play," James said. "Doubles play requires a lot of positive energy and focus, which we were able to do."
Timon Reichelt and Matej Zlatkovic competed against Jozwiak and Hartman (DU) and fell, 8-5. Michael Hobson and Xavier Riart-Ferrer downed Thomas and Michael Calderone, 8-5. They duo then played against Perrin and Palinic (DU) and ultimately fell, 8-5. Alexander Pelaez and Micah LeMoine cruised past Graetz and Polanec (DU), 8-5, but fell to Pelaez and LeMoine in the quarterfinals, 8-3.
In extra matches, Reichelt and Zlatkovic played against Thomas and Michael Calderone and downed them, 8-6. Pelaez and LeMoine competed against Palinic and Perrin (DU) and won, 8-6. Also competing in extra matches was Ferrer and Hobson who played against Polanec and Graetz (DU) besting them, 9-7.
"Tomorrow we will play in singles action and I hope to maintain our mentality on the courts for that as well," James said.
Singles play will begin Saturday, Oct. 31, at 9 a.m., at the West Hills Athletic Club.
