The Illinois State men's tennis team was unable to advance in singles action at the Western Michigan Vredevelt Invitational on Saturday. The Redbirds went 4-8 overall against tough competition from DePaul, UIC and Western Michigan. Head coach Cris James would have liked to see his players put together stronger performances.
"The main thing is we knew we were losing some close matches but we didn't do anything to change that," James said. "I saw some emotion and fight but we didn't have enough of it."
Timon Reichelt was able to defeat Bastian Harbo from UIC, 6-0, 6-4, for one of the Redbirds' wins. Alexander Pelaez downed UIC's Sebastian Lystad in the first round, 6-4, 6-4. He later fell to Bartek Jozwiak of DePaul, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Pelaez will play for fourth place in the `Brown' Flight on Sunday.
"The courts are really fast here," James said. "I don't think we were able to adjust to that. In a few of the matches we got outplayed but we just didn't have the fight in us."
All six ISU players have matches tomorrow morning to finish out the three-day tournament. Matches are scheduled for 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo, Mich.
